1st Officer Down Memorial Ride

Karlsruhe, Germany · 2022

The European Officer Down Memorial Ride traces back to the events of January 31, 2022, when two young police officers from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate were shot and killed by a poacher during a traffic stop. Out of this tragic event came the idea of setting a visible sign for emergency personnel injured or killed in the line of duty through a Europe-wide memorial ride.

On the initiative of the Blue Knights and with the support of the European Conference, the first European Officer Down Memorial Ride was organized in Karlsruhe in 2022. Since then, the ride has taken place every year, hosted by a different chapter at a changing venue each time — including, so far, Trier, Ghent, and Tulle. In this way, the ride carries the remembrance of killed and injured colleagues to different regions of Europe while also drawing attention to the growing violence against police, fire services, and emergency medical services.

For this purpose, a symbolic relay baton was created, passed on each year to the next hosting chapter, making the continuity of remembrance visible. Alongside the silent commemoration, the ride offers space for encounter, exchange, and solidarity across national and organizational boundaries.
